32-bit x86 / Experimental OS

An operating system
built from the bare metal up.

PixOS is a hobby operating system with its own file system, interactive shell, and graphical desktop. It is a work in progress, built a layer at a time.

A NOTE BEFORE BOOT

Current target

A 32-bit x86 build.
Not a Pi Zero image.

The current kernel boots in x86 protected mode, and the project includes a QEMU run target. A Raspberry Pi Zero typewriter is a fitting kind of small, focused machine to aim for, but the Zero is ARM-based; running PixOS on it would require a separate ARM port.

Built from the kernel up

A little OS with
its own point of view.

01

PXFS file system

A home-grown, block-based filesystem with directories, paths, and inode-like file metadata.

02

Shell and desktop tools

Use the interactive shell or open the windowed desktop, with pTerm, PixEdit, a file manager, calculator, and GECoder.

03

Switchable graphics

Move between classic VGA text mode and documented 32-bit graphics modes up to 1920 × 1080.

CURRENT STATUS

A hobby OS, still taking shape.

The project has a bootable ISO and plenty of unfinished edges. It is not a gaming operating system; the fun is in exploring a small x86 system with a filesystem, shell, and custom desktop of its own.
